Julian Schelb discontinues his career as pro cyclist

Strong and persistent allergy issues have kept Julian Schelb from showing his true potential in cross country racing year after year. Due to this the German rider now has decided to ask the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM to cancel his contract prematurely. As a consequence Schelb will be returning to university for the time being.

When Julian Schelb joined the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM for the 2014 season, the young rider from the Black Forest region was considered as one of Germany’s most promising talents in mountain biking. After all Schelb had performed an extraordinary feat at the under 23 World championships in the fall of 2013. A nasty crash right after the start had put him in dead last, but he rode a brilliant race from there and worked his way up through almost the entire field to win the Silver medal. As a bonus Julian Schelb still had another year in the under 23 category ahead of him. But Schelb did not celebrate his biggest success in 2014 at a championship race. At the eliminator worldcup race held in Cairns, Australia under pouring rain, Schelb made it all the way into the semifinals and went on to win the small final for 5th and get that precious last spot on the podium.

Sadly Julian Schelb could not follow up on this performance. The main reason for this were persistent pollen allergy issues that kept Schelb from performing at his best in spring and summer. This allergy mostly affected his breathing, hampering his performance as an endurance athlete. This is the main reason why Schelb could not live up to his promise in both the 2014 and 2015 season. Nevertheless the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM offered him another contract for 2016. Schelb changed almost everything in his daily regime, from personal coach to nutrition and residence in order to come to grips with his allergy issues. But unfortunately his performances throughout the early season indicated that this had not been successful.

For that reason Julian Schelb has taken the initiative and asked MERIDA’s director of sports marketing Andreas Rottler to prematurely end his contract as per May 31st 2016. Schelb is planning to interrupt his sporting career and to focus on his studies in economics instead. The MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM regrets to have to plan the future without such a talented athlete. This is a loss not only in terms of athletic value but also for the team as such, as Julian had fit in seamlessly right from the start with his positive personality. As for his studies, the team wishes him all the best.
