Podium results and an overall win in Cyprus

The MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM delivered some strong results at the fifth and final race of the Cyprus Sunshine Cup: Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå finished in 2nd in Voroklini, clinching the overall win. In the men’s race Ondrej Cink made it to the podium by finishing 3rd.

One week ago Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjåhad won the Afxentia stage race’s conclusive crosscountry race by a large enough margin to also win its overall standings. For that reason the Norwegian competed in the Voroklini crosscountry race not in the jersey of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM but in the Cyprus Sunshine Cup’s leaders jersey instead. Early on she set off in the lead of the race together with Sabine Spitz, Yana Belomoina and Ekaterina Anoshina. Soon it showed that Spitz was the most powerful rider on the ascents while Dahle Flesjå was the fastest on the descents - thus staying within striking distance of the German rider. But in the third of five laps the gap to the race leader opened up. From there the Norwegian focused on securing her 2nd place in the race and her lead in the overall standings of the Cyprus Sunshine Cup. As for the battle for 2nd Dahle Flesjå had to fend off Ekaterina Anoshina for a short while before the Russian started to fade.

Riding on her own for most of the last two laps, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå could fully focus on limiting the gap to Sabine Spitz. This worked out fine as she crossed the finish line only 21 seconds behind her German long-time rival, thus clinching the overall win in the Cyprus Sunshine Cup. With this win, the Norwegian of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM is on schedule as far as the Olympic season 2016 is concerned, so no wonder she was satisfied after the race: «I have been doing a lot of base training this week, so my legs were not the freshest - and the race was long and hard as well. As I was losing some time on the ascents again and again, I had to suffer and take some risks on the descents. But hey, it’s a good practice if you have to go to your limits on the descents. I’m very pleased with my performance throughout this two weeks, and I’m proud of winning the Cyprus Sunshine cup.»

In the men’s race Ondrej Cink and Thomas Litscher were the only riders to compete in Voroklini for the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM. A week before both had been suffering from bad health and thus could not compete for the top positions in the Afxentia stage race. But at the very start of Voroklini’s crosscountry race, Ondrej Cink seemed to have recovered well: The Czech rider was setting the pace up front in the race together with Nicola Rohrbach and the two Frenchmen Maxime Marotte and Jordan Sarrou. But as the race went on Cink was feeling the kilometers that were missing from his practice schedule. He still managed to defend 3rd places and had this to say: «I’m pleased with today’s performance, as I was feeling a lot better than a week ago: I had more power, but I still need some time to get my form back to where it should be.» Thomas Litscher finished the race in 11th. After having suffered from health issues throughout the last three weeks, he was simply glad to have been able to make it through an entire race.
